Hello
I'm Allison. I've been where you are, struggling with life and looking for help. Finding good long-term therapy changed my life and inspired me to train to be a therapist to help others.
My Story
My journey into this profession began with an MSc in Psychology in 2017 and I qualified as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in 2020. What lead me to counselling was my own history of struggling with depression and burn out, and the huge difference that long-term psychotherapy made to my life. As such, I know how daunting it can be to take that first step in seeking help.
My Approach
I have a very warm, supportive and empathetic approach. Although I will sometimes gently challenge you, I am not the person for you if you think you would benefit from a “tough love” approach. Some clients have been surprised by how quickly they have felt able to trust me and really open up about what troubles them. I see therapy as a partnership, the client and I working together to find a positive way forward. I might have the knowledge of theory and technique, but you are the expert on yourself.
It might be useful for you to know...
I am white, cisgender female and pansexual. I grew up in a working class household and was the first person in my family to go to university. I am neurodivergent (ADHD) and disabled (arthritis) and peri-menopausal, which started when I was still relatively young and which means I sometimes struggle to remember the word I am looking for. I have worked on examining the areas of my own privilege and my own gender identity. I am opposed to prejudice and oppression, and hope I create a welcoming space for all, regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, (dis)ability, belief/religion, age, size, sexuality, class, and any other area of difference. I consider myself to be LGBTQIA+ friendly (mainly as someone who belongs to this group), child-free positive (I do not see your decision not to have kids as something that needs fixing) and welcome bodies of all sizes. I have experience of working as a teacher and in academia, so have an understanding of the particular pressures of these professions.
